1966 - Tree and the Animal

It was the second year for us in San Jose and I finished my Master of Arts degree at San Jose State. We lived on a hill that separated the Silicon Valley from the Almaden Valley. It was still very rural back then, and there were oak trees, apricot orchards and animals around our little house. Trees and creatures were the subjects of my art, and this little print is the simplest I made. Technically speaking, linoleum is like wood except it lacks the natural ties that I feel with wood. Substantially it makes big difference in the style of lines that I could carve. I also tried wood engraving for this reason, and the animal and tree combination there, too. The print is  cut in a linoleum block and I printed it in black. The image is 3 1/4" X 2" on white Rives BFK.

Dreaming of ArtsPort:
A Better, Bigger Game

Looking over a pile of colorful postcards he created for his imaginary place called Emeralda, the author thinks about what other artists would do if they were invited to create postcards like this place. His is a better game than any other games he tries.
