Active and passive sides of Mariner Halfwood Press No. 7

Mariner Halfwood Press No. 7

Specifications: Made in 2012. MarinerHalfwood Press. Serial No. 120007. Mahogany, brazilian ipe cladding steel. Twelve-inch wide bed, rack driven; synchronous pressure screws. Rollers are 3-inch diameter solid steel, top and bottom. This is the last Mariner I made from Tom Kughler's steel parts. It is also the only Mariner with a 9:1 mechanical advantage.

Comment: Janine learned about the Halfwood Press at a printmaking workshop from another owner of two Halfwood presses. She brought a test linocut to check out the available presses and chose the last Mariner that I made, Number 7. Years later we reconnected and she wrote: "I continue to use my Halfwood press in my home studio space. The size works well for me. I do relief (both woodcut and linocut) and more recently have been experimenting with monotype and shellac plate etching. At one point I was not using the press so considered selling but held off. I’m very glad I kept it. I enjoy having my own space to work and print but I continue to take classes (mainly at Pratt) and enjoy learning and engaging with the print community. I no longer work so find myself spending more time on art. That is wonderful."
