Homage to Hayter

Artist's Comment: The Baren Forum Exchange (an online printmaking club) theme for 2002 was "Music" and I chose to honor S. W. Hayter, who I met in '69 and '83. In his book, New Ways of Gravure, he equates graphic composition with musical composition--opening my eyes to the idea that printmaking is more like music than drawing. I made the print using piano roll paper I found in a garage sale.
Homage to Nesch
Specifications: 2005. Print. Relief print from assemblage and woodcut. Black, brown, red. 14 in. X 10 in. Signed lower right.
Artist's comment: The theme in the Baren 2005 exchange portfolio was "Homage to an influential person," and I chose Rolf Nesch, with whom I worked in 1969. Composing the plates I was mindful of his collage technique he called metal grafik. I used woods and screen to make the block. After the edition, the resulting block was interesting, so I framed it and it is part of the David Prentice Collection.
