Bill walked to the School of Art at the UW campus early on mornings in the summer. The sun would be low in the east. He'd pass the PE department's archery field on his way. 

Five full-size archery targets stood at the back of the field, as if waiting, and behind them was a tall dark 15-foot high wood wall. Their bright primary colors backed by the early sunlight made a strong impression on him, and Bill began making drawings and prints that summer of 1968.
