BALI
Views of Bali
- Indonesia. Bali. Nr Peliatan. 2/25/83. This may be
home video, but it also is a recording of some characteristics
of the Balinese culture in which the arts or crafts are so interwoven
into daily life. The importance of dance, hand-carving, and music
is obvious when one sees children performing works which most
people would not aspire to try.
- The question, ""What is the relationship of modern
technology to traditional arts?"" is best studied by
including a visit to a country which has preserved a degree of
its traditional arts yet which permits the introduction of new
technological devices. 37:00 Min. SA830225
Talking with Nyoman Suradnya
- Indonesia. Bali. Peliatan. 3/4/83. Nyoman Suradnya,
painter, visits Bill Ritchie at the Mandala Bungalows; on the
front porch Ritchie explains his purposes for visiting Bali. Suradnya
listens with great politeness, and asks about exchange programs
for printmaking and batik. Ritchie gives his views regarding media
injected into a culture like that of Bali. Suradnya is patient
with the guest as they compare their understanding of art, technology,
and traditions. An Australian friend, Cam Dawson, joins the visit.
- Technology has found its way into every corner of the world.
"The disease of progress," says one Balinese painter,
"that is what I call it." There is concern on the part
of some people that political or commercially-motivated power
is more dangerous with technology; there is a suggestion that
artists have the ability to ameliorate this danger." 43:00
