Jacki Parry in Her Studio
- Scotland. . Glasgow. 6/10/83. Jacki Parry had agreed,
while she was still in Barcelona doing her papermaking project,
to help in making a documentary videotape on her project at Laurence
Barker's workshop. This recording is a follow up in which she
shows her finished work and the works-in-progress; she also shows
her earlier work in black-and-white etchings.
- Experimentation is often the reason given when an artist is
asked to explain the work they are doing which does not neatly
fit into the context of their usual style; you will hear it often
to explain works-in-progress. 20:00 Min. SA830610
Opening at Glasgow's Printclub Gallery
- Scotland. . Glasgow. 6/11/83. This is a videotape glimpse
of an opening in Scotland, interesting only in that it takes place
in a not-for-profit gallery and, as such, is able to feature the
work of artists whose art would not likely attract commercial
support. In this instance, it is an artist-in-residence from the
Philippines.
- Around the world, openings of art exhibits fill an important
need in urban communities. They are not only to celebrate the
publication of new artworks by contemporary artists, but also
provide opportunities for new meetings for visitors, exchange
of ideas, and development of new projects. 1:00 Min. SA830611
The Glasgow Printmaker's Workshop
- Scotland. . Glasgow. 6/12/83. A very short tour - really
just a glimpse - of the collective workshop for print makers in
Glasgow. There was not much going on, but the amount of equipment
available indicated that a lot could be.
- As in other European countries, city and state incentives
make the community printmaking workshop a possibility; it has
been true for generations throughout Europe. 1:00 Min. SA830612
The Glasgow School of Architecture Computer Graphics Demonstration
- Scotland. . Glasgow. 6/13/83. The computer education
program of Dr. Alec James at the Glasgow School of Art and Architecture
is demonstrated, showing the routines which were developed here
for the students of architecture, and the newly acquired system
which is oriented more to the art students' interests - such as
color and paint programs.
- Some schools of art have, in the persons of their directorship,
individuals as important to the schools' students as they are
to the faculty - and even to the buildings themselves! In responding
to the questions raised by new technologies and the arts, it is
often the directors who are in positions to act. 18:00 Min. SA830613
The Edinburgh College of Art Printmaking Workshop
- Scotland. . Edinburgh. 6/14/83. This videotape recording
shows another printmaking workshop, well furnished with the usual
equipment for lithography, intaglio, and screen-printing, plus
modest papermaking and photographic facilities, and located in
a fine old Scottish home(!). There is a mixture of new and old
technologies here, plus some one-of-a-kind machines built as experimental
prototypes: a miniature hollander beater, for example.
- In schools abroad there is always a split, referred to as
a division between design and fine arts. Printmaking often shares
a place between these divisions (or camps as they are often called).
The benefits to the students working here is that the medium of
printmaking affords them opportunities for working in manner not
controlled by their academic parameters. 6:00 Min. SA830614
The Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop
- Scotland. . Edinburgh. 6/15/83. The director of the
workshop is Kenneth Duffy, and he describes some of the shop programs.
He says that there may be some video productions forthcoming.
There are views of the workshop equipment and a few people at
work. The tape does not show, however, the galleries and the coffee
shop housed in the same building.
- It would appear that most individuals who are invested heavily
in print publishing (as distinguished from electronic publishing)
activities of their community find it difficult and slow-going
to venture into the other media arts. 5:00 Min. SA830615
