Bill Ritchie's art in Washington State

in
the
Jenny Rockwood Collection

Spring
Provenance: 1961. "Spring". Painting. Approximately 24 X 14 inches. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right.
Artist's comment: First taken into the collection of Jim and Paquita Rupp - Bill's classmates at Central Washington State College (Now CWU). They shared many experiences. They bought this painting from Bill's senior thesis show and, in addition, a sculpture. Jim commented that he knew about straw and hay bales because he had worked at loading them on the farm, like me. Bill painted it in the Sarah Spurgeon studio at Central. The gallery at CWU is named after Professor Spurgeon. Bill wrote about Professor Spurgeon in his autobiography, available at www.emeraldaworks.com at the time of this entry, and this painting is included in the images in the section of 1963 or 1964.
In 2023, Jennie Rockwood sent a message to Bill to confirm its provenance, including photos of the painting and its back as well.
Valuation: The Rupps paid $45 in 1964, the equivalent of $430 in 2023. Bill's art auction reports a value of approximately $1/square inch using the AskArt tables, the minimum insurance value therefore, is $336. Bill's family estimates the value to be $1,200.
