1978 - Hasty Bridge at Sunrise

I like to play sometimes with woodblocks printed in watercolor. The Asian block-printing techniques for creative or modern style printmaking invites this. Known as sosaku hanga it’s a wide range of printing processes that use waterbase inks instead of the Western-style oil base inks. When I painted the pink color in the bottom of the block, I remembered a pretty cocktail I was introduced to in Mexico, the Tequila Sunrise. This is a monoprint because I made only one, the dark one first and then, with what remained of the ink, the second, lighter bridge at the bottom. I cut the block very fast, thus the sense of haste. The black, pink, and yellow image measures 8 1/2" X 5" on a tan "antique" Asian paper, 10 1/2" X 6 1/2". Visit the Web site of the owner in the Clare Livingston Collection
