Two Halfwood Presses

Galleon Halfwood Press #1
Specifications: Etching Press. 2007. Galleon Halfwood Press. Serial No. 90001. Roller diameter 2 1/4" x 9" long, top and bottom. Bed is 5/16" polycarbonate, 9" x 26". The overall length is 27"; overall width is 13 3/4"; overall height is 15". Weight is 50 lbs.; Drive wheel is 12" diameter stainless steel. The bed is rack-driven, approximating a 3:1 mechanical advantage. Woods used are American black walnut and oak with wenge interlayering and trimmed with ipe. Carol had her press retrofitted with synchronized pressure screws. The press included three etching felts and user's manual.
Comment: Carol saw the Galleon on the Web and as she had been looking for a press to get back into her printmaking, she called. She liked the mini, but the Galleon was her first choice. A year passed, and then she saw a second opportunity and got a Mini. Each time she is in Seattle, we have talks ranging widely--from the things we like on the Internet (TED, for example) to our shared interest in cooperative studios. Carol likes lithography so I did its test of the press, using my first experience with vitreography, the closest medium to lithography, in my opinion. The First Galleon Halfwood Press: After Tom Kughler built the Century Halfwoood, 24" Model , then the Mini and the Mariner, he suggested that a nine-inch bed would be perfect in every regard. So he built the Galleon - being between the Mini with its six-inch wide bed and the Mariner with its twelve-inch wide bed. At 50 lbs it's almost as portable as the Mini. I made Number 1 mostly of oak, with mahogany laminated in the base. Tom was correct about its popularity and the Galleon Halfwood Press was immediately a success. Mini Halfwood Press #62
Specifications: Made in 2010. Mini Halfwood Press. Serial No. 60062. Rollers are 1.5 x 5.75 inches top and bottom. The bed is 1/4 x 6 x 17 inches in the standard polycarbonate; overall length is 17.5 inches; overall width is 9 inches, 10 inches high and weighs 12 lbs.; the stainless steel wheel is 8 inches diameter; the woods used are black walnut base with ipe cladding steel, walnut hood capped with ebony. The instrument box is poplar, baltic birch trimmed in ipe. Included are felts, copper plate, Allen Wrench, User's Manual and DVD.
